A boulder wall is a gravity wall — it stays put because a few tons of angular rock, keyed into a prepared base and leaned back into the hill, outweighs the soil pushing on it. Get the mass, the base, and the water right and it outlasts most of what’s built around it. Get one wrong and it leans, no matter how good the stone looked on delivery day.
When this matters
- A slope, cut bank, or hillside that’s slumping, sliding, or losing soil every spring
- The uphill side of a driveway cut that keeps shedding material into the travel lane
- Steep yard you want terraced into flat, usable space
- An embankment or streambank washing out during runoff
- The edge of a building pad or turnaround that needs to be held
What actually holds the wall up
The base comes first. We cut a trench into undisturbed ground below the wall line, level it, and set a compacted crushed-rock pad for the first course. That bottom course gets buried — a wall starting at ground level has nothing resisting it at the toe, and the toe is where a lean starts. On soft or frost-susceptible ground the base gets overexcavated and rebuilt.
Then rock selection. Angular rock with broad flat faces stacks and locks; rounded river cobble rolls under load and belongs in a landscape bed, not in a wall. Every rock should bear on two below it so vertical joints break from course to course instead of running straight up the face. The largest stone goes in the bottom course, where the load is, and the wall steps back as it climbs — roughly an inch or two of setback per foot of height. That batter is doing real work, not styling.
Water is the load nobody sizes for
Boulder walls drain better than solid faces because water passes between the rock, but “better” is not “handled.” Behind the face we place clean, free-draining gravel with filter fabric between the drain rock and native soil, so fines don’t migrate in and plug the voids. Where a wall cuts into a wet slope or a seep, a perforated line at the base gets daylighted to a real outlet — not stopped short and hoped over.
The reason is freeze-thaw. Saturated backfill freezes, expands, pushes outward against the back of the wall, then thaws and leaves it slightly worse off than it started. Repeat that for a decade and you get the bulged, tilted walls we’re called out to rebuild. Spring runoff off the Absarokas is the other half: meltwater finds the uncompacted backfill line behind a wall and travels it. Where a wall is part of a larger water problem, drainage and erosion control get planned with it, not after.
Where this goes wrong
- Built on topsoil or old fill. The wall settles unevenly, joints open, and the face comes apart from the bottom up.
- Plumb instead of battered. With no backward lean there’s nothing in reserve when the soil pushes.
- No filter fabric. The drain gravel silts up, the wall becomes a dam, and pressure builds behind it.
- Terraces stacked too close. An upper wall set right above a lower one surcharges it; terraces need real horizontal offset.
- Ignoring what sits above. A driveway, parking area, or structure near the top is a live load the wall has to be sized for.
- Streambank work without the approvals. Work in or along a live stream runs through the landowner’s permit process with the conservation district and county. We build to the approved design and coordinate.
Boulders or block?
Boulders win where the ground is rough, the slope is long, and a machine can reach — they go up fast, look native, and pass water through the face instead of damming it. Block wins in tight quarters near a building, where a clean vertical face and a small footprint matter more. Past a certain height or load either type wants an engineer’s design, and we’ll say so rather than stack something that won’t hold. How we approach it
We walk the slope first — soil, seeps, what sits above and below the wall, where the water goes — and we check access, because boulders arrive by truck and get set with an excavator that has to reach the wall line. From there: excavate the base trench into undisturbed ground, build and compact the leveling pad, set the largest rock in a buried first course, then stack upward with breaking joints and consistent batter. Drain gravel and fabric go in as the wall rises, not shoveled in at the end, and backfill goes back in lifts. Grading then ties the wall into the yard, driveway, or pad so runoff has somewhere to go.
