Boulder Walls in Paradise Valley, Montana

There’s a reason boulder walls fit out here: they’re built from the same rock the landscape is made of. EZ Road Repair designs and sets natural boulder walls that stabilize slopes, stop erosion, and shape usable space — for homes, ranches, and rural properties across Emigrant, Livingston, Pray, Gardiner, and the rest of Paradise Valley. Placed on a proper base with the right-sized rock, a boulder wall is both a rugged retaining structure and a feature that looks like it’s always been there.

When a boulder wall makes sense

  • Holding back a slope or hillside on a rural or sloped property
  • Stabilizing a driveway cut or the edge of a building pad
  • Stopping erosion on an embankment, streambank, or hillside
  • Terracing steep ground into flat, usable space
  • Adding a natural, low-maintenance feature that doubles as a retaining wall

What makes a boulder wall last

  • A prepared, compacted base — the wall is only as stable as what it sits on. We excavate and build the base first.
  • Rock sized to the wall — larger base boulders keyed together, sized to the height and load.
  • Proper batter and drainage — set with a slight backward lean and backfilled so water drains through, not against it.
  • Local stone — sourced nearby so it matches the landscape and keeps costs down.

Our approach

We handle the whole job in-house: excavation and base prep, drainage, setting the rock, and backfill and grading to tie it into your property. Deciding between wall types, or need a taller structural wall? Start with our retaining walls overview. Want boulders and stone for landscaping instead of a full wall? We deliver landscaping stone and boulders, and pair well with stone masonry work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the advantage of a boulder wall over a block retaining wall?

Boulder walls look natural, go up fast with the right equipment, and drain well because water passes between the rock instead of building up behind a solid face. They suit rural and sloped Montana properties where a manufactured block wall would look out of place. For tight spaces near a building, block sometimes makes more sense — we'll tell you which fits.

How big are the boulders you use?

It depends on the wall's height and job. We size the rock to the wall — larger base boulders for stability, with the whole wall keyed into a compacted base so it doesn't shift or settle. Bigger rock also means a wall that stays put through freeze-thaw and runoff.

Can a boulder wall actually hold back a slope, or is it just for looks?

Both. Set properly on a prepared base with the right size rock and batter (backward lean), a boulder wall is a real retaining structure that stabilizes slopes and stops erosion. It just happens to look good doing it. For very tall or heavily loaded walls we'll advise when an engineered design is warranted.

Do boulder walls need drainage?

They drain better than solid walls because water moves through the gaps, but we still prep the base and backfill so water has a clear path and the wall isn't sitting in saturated soil. Proper base and drainage are what keep any wall from moving here.

Where does the rock come from?

We source boulders locally so the stone matches the Montana landscape and keeps hauling costs down. We can also deliver landscaping boulders and stone on their own — see delivered materials, or call (406) 623-9075.
