Flagstone patios and paver walkways are some of the best upgrades you can make to a Montana home. They add usable outdoor space, curb appeal, and a finished look. But they’re also where freeze-thaw exposes shortcuts fast. A patio set on a poor base heaves, tilts, and pops its joints within a winter or two. Built on the right base, the same patio stays flat and tight for decades. The difference is almost entirely underground.

It’s all in the base

The visible stone or paver is the easy part. What makes it last is what’s underneath:

• A compacted aggregate base — deep enough and properly compacted in lifts, so it carries the load and won’t settle.
• Drainage — so water doesn’t collect under the surface and freeze.
• A setting bed and edge restraint that hold everything in place.

This is the same fundamentals we bring to roads and building pads — a compacted, well-drained base — applied to hardscaping. It’s not glamorous, and you can’t see it once it’s done, but it’s the whole ballgame.

Flagstone vs. pavers

• Flagstone gives a natural, irregular look that fits Montana landscapes and pairs beautifully with stone walls and boulder features. Set in sand or mortared, it has a timeless feel.
• Pavers give a uniform, structured surface and a wide range of patterns and colors — and individual units can be lifted and reset if you ever need to.

Both work here when the base is right.
