A Hole Is Easy. A Dry Basement Isn’t.

Excavating a basement looks like the simplest part of a build — dig a big rectangular hole. But the difference between a basement that stays dry for fifty years and one that’s damp from day one is decided right here, during the excavation. Get the dig, the drainage, and the backfill right, and the rest of the structure has a solid, dry foundation to sit on. Get them wrong, and no amount of finishing fixes a wet basement.

Stable walls and accurate grade

A basement excavation has to be dug to precise depth and grade, with the walls of the excavation cut stable for the soil conditions. Montana ground — rock, clay, sand, and everything in between — behaves differently, and reading it right keeps the dig safe and the foundation true. An over-dig that’s too tight makes the foundation crew’s job miserable; one that’s sloppy wastes backfill and time.

Drainage is what keeps it dry

Water is the enemy of every basement. A dry one depends on:

• Foundation drainage — a perimeter footing drain that collects water and carries it away before it can sit against the wall.
• Free-draining backfill and drainage rock that lets water move down to the drain instead of pooling against the foundation.
• Grading away from the structure so surface water never heads toward the foundation in the first place.

This is the same drainage-first thinking we bring to roads, applied to a building. Water that can’t get to the wall can’t get into the basement.

Backfill done in lifts

Once the foundation is in, the backfill around it has to be placed and compacted in lifts. Dumped-in backfill settles over the next few years, leaving low spots right against the house that funnel water toward the wall — exactly what you spent all that effort to prevent. Doing the backfill right protects the whole investment.
